Would you be interested in running a pilot of JA Finance Park Online
next fall? Junior Achievement of the Upper Midwest has been running their own version this year, but JA World Wide has now come up with their own they would like to implement.

They need to have 5 schools on board by May 28. You would need to do the entire curriculum and 5 simulation sessions (in a computer lab) by late November.

They will be asking students to do a basic pretest and posttest for the simulation, and teachers and volunteers to provide feedback after each simulation session. This piece shouldn't be too bad. You will truly have influence over what this program will look like moving forward, so it is important that you give us honest feedback and ideas.

If interested, please contact Jennifer Bahti at jbahti@jaum.org.

I agree as business teachers we need to teach right from wrong when it comes to social networking. I question the need to open up FB in the classroom to do this though. And I just read something about Ning concentrating only on their paying customers, so am hesitant to go in the direction. I would love to hear some ideas on how other teachers are doing this in their classrooms.

I just attended the class here at MBEI on social networks. There were a lot of negative comments about why a teacher would create one. I feel, especially as business teachers, we need to take the forefront of educating our students on how to use a social network. I think we need to look at it as another tool to teach students how to responsibly be a part of their world. What do you think? (use http://www.ning.com/ to create these)

I attended the "Economics Systems" course at the University of MN - St. Paul Campus last summer. It is offered through MCEE (Minnesota Council on Economic Education). Most of the course was dedicated to giving activities to reinforce economic concepts. It was AWESOME. I recommend it to anyone teaching Economics.

Does anyone have experience with Money Smart, a free financial education program for adults and youth from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC)? The program also offers free Train-the-Trainer (TTT) sessions to individuals who wish to lead the program in their local communities. The FDIC regional trainer would like at least a group of 20 people to travel to from St. Louis to MN offer the training session. I’m interested in being a trainer and leading both the youth and adult programs in my community and I’m considering working with regional FDIC trainer to organize a TTT session here in South Central MN (Mankato, New Ulm). If you’ve had experience with this program or are interested in possibly participating in the TTT session please let me know.

I am teaching 11th grade Economics and I am always looking for hand-on applications. If anyone has any lesson plans or ideas to pass on it would be greatly appreciated! I can't tell you teaching a room of 40 how difficult it is to find and implement good applications. The text book is very boring and does not seem to get the students attention. I need help in getting them excited about economics through projects and applications. HELP! Thank you.

I ran across this film today that looks like it would be great for a personal finance class.

From http://maxedoutmovie.com :

Maxed Out takes viewers on a journey deep inside the American style of debt, where things seem fine as long as the minimum monthly payment arrives on time. With coverage that spans from small American towns all the way to the White House, the film shows how the modern financial industry really works, explains the true definition of "preferred customer" and tells us why the poor are getting poorer while the rich keep getting richer. Hilarious, shocking and incisive, Maxed Out paints a picture of a national nightmare which is all too real for most of us."

The DVD can be purchased on Amazon.com. You can also rent it from Amazon On Demand and watch it online for $2.99 for 7 days.
